Even though mxtoolbox reports the mx lookup succeeds with the correct IP address and the diagnostics report everything is OK, I cannot telnet to the server on port 25. I should be able to "telnet mail.mydomain.com 25", but this times out as it doesn’t appear to respond on port 25. mail.mydomain.com is resolving to the correct IP and you can see from the mxtoolbox that the mail server responded (somehow) and communicated with and mxtoolbox via mail commands "HELO" etc.

Any ideas?

Where are you trying to telnet from? The most likely cause of this problem is that port 25 outbound is being blocked on whatever PC you are telnetting from. Blocking would most likely come from a firewall or antivirus product.
