Configuring Outbound Email Service Exchange 2003About this Document: This document is intended for email server administrators who have FlexBox email services through the MxToolBox. It contains instructions for configuring Outbound mail filtering specifically with Microsoft Exchange 2003. The procedures on other versions of Exchange are almost identical. Please consult your mail server documentation for other mail servers. About Outbound Mail Service: Outbound filtering works by configuring your email server to send all outbound email through our servers instead of directly to the receiving server. Note: Rerouting outgoing mail flow to changes existing mail flow process. Instructions provided are suggestions which will work with the most common mail flow scenarios. As such, any changes to mail server configuration should be made at the discretion of your mail administrator. We do not support mail server configuration. Procedure Overview There are Three (3) simple steps to the process:
Step 1: Configure SmartHost to route outbound mail through MxToolBox (Exchange 2003)
outbound-a1.mx-route.com ![]() Note: Important! You must check to see if you have any connectors setup (see next step 2) Step 2: Check for SMTP connectors Some common versions of Exchange (small business editions) install an SMTP connector by default. In your System manager, you will know if you have one because it will be listed under the “Connectors” folder: ![]() If you have an SMTP connector setup, here’s what to do:
outbound-a1.mx-route.com Step 3: Test your configuration: Send a message from a mail client using the outbound server to an account that is outside your network. You should see a line in the header e-mail which indicates being received and delivered by outbound-A1.mx-route.com (A1 may vary slightly, e.g. B4, C2, etc.). Send a message from an outside e-mail account to a mailbox on your mail server to ensure that inbound mail flow was not broken by this configuration. Here is a sample of what you should see in the email header, indicating that your outbound test message we delivered through MxToolBox: Received: from hrndva-mx-01.mgw.rr.com (hrndva-mx-01.mgw.rr.com [24.28.204.20])by ncmx02.mgw.rr.com (8.12.10/8.12.8) with ESMTP id iBFEVXxT001341 for Note: If your outbound mail is still going out direct, you may need to reboot your Exchange server for the changes to take effect.
